How GEO factors differ from SEO

Generative Engine Optimization follows its own logic. Classic SEO factors like backlinks, keyword density and CTR matter little. Semantic clarity, citability and structured data decide whether your brand appears in an AI answer or not. While SEO aims for blue links, GEO ensures an AI model treats your content as a source it understands, cites and recommends.

The 12 ranking factors, weighted

  1. Structured data (Schema.org): JSON-LD is the single strongest GEO signal. Implement Organization, WebSite, BreadcrumbList, Service, FAQPage, Article, LocalBusiness.
  2. llms.txt: a markdown file at the root that introduces your site's key content to AI models. De facto standard in 2026.
  3. Content clarity (citability score): AI models prefer factual statements with numbers and sources. Marketing phrases do not get cited.
  4. Question-style headings: AI models match user queries 1:1 with question H2s. "What is GEO optimization?" gets cited; "Our methodology" does not.
  5. Lists and tables: ordered lists and tables are crawler favorites and are often quoted verbatim.
  6. E-E-A-T signals: author pages with Person schema, LinkedIn links, customer logos and testimonials.
  7. Performance and Core Web Vitals: Lighthouse 90+, LCP < 2.5 s, INP < 200 ms, CLS < 0.1.
  8. Recency and dating: visible publication and update dates plus dateModified in JSON-LD.
  9. External brand mentions: mentions across magazines, podcasts, Wikipedia raise citation probability.
  10. Consistent NAP data: identical Name/Address/Phone across web, GBP, directories and social.
  11. Multilingualism and hreflang: language-specific content (not just translations) and proper hreflang tags.
  12. WebMCP and agent readiness: websites that respond as API endpoints to AI agents are structurally preferred — a 12–18 month lead for early adopters.
